I don´t know why generating code step takes so long, but you should wait for
the whole process. It takes a long time for me too (I go to sleep in this
step).
I could compile 0.3.13 QuantLibXL version using Visual C++ Express IDE.
Currently I am trying vcbuild.exe command line tool, in order to make it
automatic.
