Luigi,
I have a comment on your what somewhat emotive comment "sub-standard
compilers". There are two kinds of compilers, those that do and those that
do not support the ANSI/ISO C++ standard. Older versions of VC++ did not
support all features but VS 2003 does.
Personally, my opinion is that all mistakes are made by the programmers.
When I get a compiler error, I look at what I have done wrong. I use the
KISS principle always (keep it simple ...)

With templates one has to learn how to crawl before we do the 200 breast
stoke in Athens.

Mark,
Do you mean export of DLL and its functions? If yes, then it is possible. If you use COM this is needed.
Or is is the export of templates in C++?

On .NET this can be superceded by Assemblies which is a self-aware DLL (contains metadata).

I don't think so. Then again, does any compiler but Comeau?

The export is meant to split the template into .hpp and .cpp files. Hardly any compilers support this features.
I never use export anyway because we always create two files .hpp and .cpp and use #define in each one. Then we include .cpp in main().

This solution is a little bit more tiem consuming but well worth the effort in the long term (this is the approach on CD in my book where we have many templates).

I found the Lippman article rather depressing -- it implies that microsoft
visual C++
will never be standard compliant.

IMO, the features that are not supported are those that I would personally never use anyway. For example, export is obscure and is in fact optimisation. What is more important with templates is that VC 2003 supports features that Boos and Loki use, for example nested templates.

That's an old article.  You might be surprised.  He works at MS now
(http://blogs.msdn.com/slippman)  and part of this future is encouraging
